Susan Smith
Biography
Susan Smith is Deputy Director (Student Experience) and a Professor of Accounting at UCL School of Management. Susan is a Fellow of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales and holds a PhD in Accounting from the University of Sussex. She is a National Teaching Fellow (2022) and a Principal Fellow of Advance HE. She was awarded these fellowships in recognition of her work to enhance the student experience. Before joining UCL, she was Associate Dean (Education and Students) at the University of Sussex Business School.
Susan is an elected member of the Institute of Chartered Accountants in England and Wales (‘ICAEW’) Council representing the South East. She has served as Chair of the ICAEW Ethical Standards Committee (2022-2024) and is currently the Chair of the Consultative Committee of Accountancy Bodies (CCAB) Ethics Committee. Before becoming an academic, Susan worked in various roles in practice and industry, including as a Director at FitchRatings.
She is the Deputy Chair of the Quality Assurance Agency (QAA) 2024 subject benchmark review for Finance. She has also acted as an EFMD programme reviewer and external examiner to several Universities.
Susan is the founder of the Accounting Streams project alongside Professor Richard Murphy (University of Sheffield) and Jenni Rose (University of Manchester). The project seeks to innovate the accounting curriculum by developing a digital-first open-access text and supporting resources. Susan also serves on the Editorial Board of the Journal of Perspectives in Applied Academic Practice, as a UKAT trustee, and on the UKCISA Audit and Risk Committee. Susan is currently Chair of the British Accounting and Finance Association (BAFA) Committee of Departments of Accounting and Finance (CDAF) group.
