Summary
Capitalist societies are shaped, to a large extent, by organizations, including corporations, non-profit advocacy groups, and government agencies. Thus, to understand the evolution of capitalist societies, we need to understand how influential organizations change and adapt to shifting circumstances. Some argue that chance events play a huge role in shaping organizations, while others privilege explanations grounded in the power of organizational agency. How can we as social scientists model organizational evolution in a way that enables rigorous empirical investigation?
