As the year draws to an end, we are looking back at our talented staff, students and alumni’s biggest achievements from 2021. Together we have achieved many outstanding things throughout the year, so it was difficult to select just a few. But we’ve narrowed it down to our top 10 highlights of 2020.
Mind Shift podcast launched
This year, the School of Management launched our first podcast series, Mind Shift. Hosted by Vaughn Tan, Mind Shift delves into the research and work of the diverse community at UCL School of Management to share the school’s knowledge and expertise and provide an insight into the rapidly shifting world of business today. In Series One, we’ve covered a range of topics including; platform competition, building smart cities, cross-sector innovations, frontline employee innovation and much more.
The work produced at UCL School of Management touches on industries globally and is helping organisations succeed and change the world. Managers, leaders and policymakers outside of academia can also learn from the series to help their high-growth and multinational businesses thrive in a deeply complex, interconnected and data-driven world.

executive Education launches
This year we marked a new milestone with the launch of our new #ExecutiveEducation programmes, where managers and executives learn from our expert faculty in the highest classroom in Europe on Level 50 of One Canada Square in Canary Wharf.
From analytics to AI, our programmes are designed to equip leaders with the skills and knowledge to help them progress in the complex, interconnected business world of the future.
A UCL Love Story
On Valentine’s Day this year, we caught up with our very own Duke and Duchess of Cambridge and heard how their love story blossomed whilst studying at UCL School of Management.
From the Class of 2017, MSc Entrepreneurship Alumna Andra Gupta shared the wonderful story of how she and (now husband!) Raunak Gupta met, and how their time at #UCLSoM played such a pivotal role in their relationship.
SoM alumna wins Young Leader of the Year award
In 2021 we saw our talented alumni community continue to make their mark and stand out from the crowd. MSc Entrepreneurship Alumna Magdalena Kron was one of those dominating in her industry as she received the Young Leader of the Year Award!
Since graduating, Magdalena has been thriving in her industry and is now the Rise Global Fintech Platform Directory at Barclays, where she supports innovative startups to disrupt the financial industry using technology on a global scale.
Level 50 opens
How we have grown!
This year, UCL School of Management acquired a new floor, Level 50, in the iconic One Canada Square in Canary Wharf, the UK’s leading Business and Finance hub.
The new highly innovative space is equipped with four state-of-the-art lecture theatres, two seminar suites, multiple breakout and teaching rooms, and two student hubs, all of which have stunning views across the City of London.

Chia named Poets and Quants 40-under-40
Chia-Jung Tsay was named one of Poets and quants Best 40-Under-40 Business School Professors of 2021! With 86 nominations, Chia was one of the most nominated professors this year and in any previous year!
Upon hearing the news Chia said: “I am thrilled to contribute to UCL’s first placement on the Poets&Quants list. It was truly an all-school effort, and I am grateful for the support of my wonderful colleagues and students.”
AMBA Accredited
This was a special year for #UCLSoM as we received accreditation from the Association of MBAs (AMBA) to officially make us one of the top 2% of business schools globally.
AMBA represents the highest standard of achievement in postgraduate business education. Its rigorous assessment criteria ensure that only the highest-calibre programmes which demonstrate the best standards in teaching, curriculum, and student interaction achieve Association of MBAs accreditation.
UK Tier 1 global talent visa awarded to BSc IMB alumna
BSc Information Management for Business Alumna Slaviana Pavlovich earned DOUBLE congratulations this year for being awarded the UK Tier 1 Global Talent Visa and having been selected to represent the UK as a Delegate at the 65th UN Commission on the Status of Women.
We are extremely proud of Slaviana for her fantastic achievements. The global talent visa recognises Slaviana’s experience and expertise and her ability to become a tech leader, giving her the freedom to work in the UK on a flexible basis without employer sponsorship.
PhD Students triumph at INFORMS
This year our PhD students received three awards and four nominations for their working papers. Sidika Tunc Candogan and Ersin Korpeoglu and their co-author Gizem Korpeoglu from the Eindhoven University of Technology for their paper being selected as the INFORMS Technology, Innovation Management and Entrepreneurship Section (TIMES) Paper of the Month. Sidika Tunc Candogan stuck again when she and her co-authors have been named as finalists in the INFORMS TIMES Best Working Paper Award for the second year in a row. hat two working papers led by Sidika Tunc Candogan and Arturo Estrada Rodriguez received recognition at the INFORMS Conference in October.
Congratulations to Arturo and co-authors Rouba Ibrahim and Dongyuan. Their paper “On Customer (Dis)honesty in Priority Queues: The Role of Lying Aversion” was awarded the second prize position for the 2021 INFORMS Behavioral OM Best Working Paper Award. The paper was also nominated as a finalist for the IBM Best Student Paper award.
Congratulations also go to Sidika and co-authors Philipp Cornelius, Bilal Gokpinar, Ersin Korpeoglu and Christopher Tan. They won the runner-up position for the 2021 INFORMS Times Best Working Paper Award, for their paper “Product development in Crowdfunding: Theoretical and Empirical Analysis”.
Welcoming new staff
As a school, this year we have continued to grow and have welcomed many new staff members, 27 in total. We’ve been joined by 14 new faculty members and 13 professional services staff, who have each brought their own expertise and skills to the school. We are delighted to have such driven and talented staff at the school and look forward to the new possibilities their knowledge and wisdom bring for us all.
